From Ian Caldwell 1st Feb 2003: William, also known as William the Bastard, inherited the Dukedom of Normandy, before claiming the throne of England and famously defeating Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. William died in action against the French, falling off his horse and rupturing his intestines which had already been weakened by dysentery. He was 60. He had grown very fat and Philip of France said he looked like a pregnant woman. His body was taken to Caen for burial but when the attendants tried to force it into the stone sarcophagus it burst, filling the church with a foul smell. An unfortunate end to the life of an otherwise fortunate king.

Adele was the mother of King Stephen who reigned from 1135 to 1154, and who was in constant dispute over the throne with his cousin Matilda, daughter of Adele's brother King Henry I. See http://www.britannia.com/history/monarchs/mon25.html for further information on King Stephen.
